Blairgowrie - Perthshire
When on a
Self Catering Perthshire holiday make sure that you put Blairgowrie on your itinerary. The stunning red stone towns of Blairgowrie and it's sister Rattray lie on either side of the River Ericht, emerging from the spectacular gorges of Strathmore.
The history of Blairgowrie is rich and fascinating. The town became a burgh in 1634 and the military road North to Braemar was opened in 1724.
Towards the end of the 18 th Century, the area became a huge centre for growing flax. Initially, the linen weaving industry was a cottage industry but soon progressed so well that the first industrial mill was erected in 1798. In 1855, the railway arrived as a branch line from Coupar Angus. New mills continued being constructed throughout the 19 th Century.
In recent times, it has become a major centre of Perthshire's soft fruit growing areas, especially raspberries. Nearby you will find the Rosemount golf course considered one of the best inland courses in Scotland and designed by some of the greats in the early history of Scottish golf. |
